Inside Britain’s Coldest Homes

2022 / 00:02:34 / Editor

Thousands of people across England and Wales are living in the coldest neighbourhoods, where homes are poorly insulated and energy bills are spiralling. We used a thermal camera to show the impact of the cold, and how people are trying to keep warm.

I edited this video down from more than eight hours of audio recordings of interviews with dozens of people around the UK from neighbourhoods which Friends of the Earth identified as energy crisis hotspots. The audio recordings are edited together with thermal images of the people telling their stories, demonstrating how homes leak heat and revealing how people are increasingly struggling to pay the bills. The images were taken by photographer Grey Hutton, and I layered on top visual effects, animated text and sound design.
